What is an expression?

An expression contains one or more terms with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

We always combine the like terms in an expression when we simplify.

We also keep all the like terms on one side of the expression if we are dealing with two sides of an expression.

Example:

1 + 3x + 4y = 7 is an expression.

3 + 4 is an expression.

2 x 4 + 6 x 7 – 9 is an expression.

33 + 77 – 88 is an expression.

We have,

Pia cuts her ribbon into 10 equal pieces and uses 7 of them, so she uses 7/10 of her ribbon.

Lily cuts her ribbon into 3 equal pieces and uses 2 of them, so she uses 2/3 of her ribbon.

Eric cuts his ribbon into 15 equal pieces and uses 12 of them, so he uses 12/15 or 4/5 of his ribbon.

To compare who uses the most ribbon, we need to convert all the fractions to have a common denominator.

The least common multiple of 10, 3, and 15 is 30.

So we can rewrite the fractions as:

Pia: 7/10 = 21/30

Lily: 2/3 = 20/30

Eric: 4/5 = 24/30

Thus,

Eric uses the most ribbon, as he uses 24/30 of his ribbon which is equivalent to 4/5 of his ribbon.
