The ribbon was [tex]3 \frac{1}{4}[/tex] inches wide and had an area of [tex]19 \frac{1}{2}[/tex] square inches. What is the length of the ribbon?

Answer :

Hello!

The formula for finding area is l × w

If the area is 19 ½ inches and it was 3 ¼ inches wide, then the length will be 19 ½ ÷ 3 ¼ (Area ÷ Width)

[tex]19 \frac{1}{2} \div 3 \frac{1}{4} [/tex]

Change both to improper fraction

[tex]19 \frac{1}{2} = \frac{39}{2} [/tex]

[tex]3 \frac{1}{4} = \frac{13}{4} [/tex]

[tex] \frac{39}{2} \div \frac{13}{4} [/tex]

Keep 39/2
Change ÷ to ×
Flip 13/4 = 4/13

[tex] \frac{39}{2} \times \frac{4}{13} = \frac{156}{26} = 6[/tex]

[tex]\framebox {The length of the ribbon is 6 inches}[/tex]
length = area / width
= 19 1/2 / 3 1/4
= 39/2 / 13/4
= 39/2 * 4 / 13

= 3/1 * 2 /1

= 6 inches long Answer
